Horses
thrive in the stress-free environment at Stewart Ranch, located in the beautiful Santa
Cruz mountains.
Owners Shea Stewart and Jim Walters have spent the past 4 years transforming
their ranch into a safe and supportive environment for the horses who live there. With
Shea’s background in herd behavior, and Jim being a professional heavy equipment
operator, they have turned Stewart Ranch into what it is today.
The ranch features open-air paddocks and stalls which allow horses to be able to see their
surroundings and socialize with their neighbors. This set up promotes healthier mental and
physical well being. Shea
believes that box and barn stalls are a poor quality of life for a horse as their
respiratory system is compromised, and as plains animals they are not too keen on being in
a “room.”
Jim has re-done the arena, round pen, all of the roads, and most of the stalls adding
culverts and proper drainage throughout the entire ranch. His hard work was recognized
through the County of Santa Cruz, and the Regional Conservation District which awarded
Stewart Ranch with a plaque for implementing proper horse care with less impact on the
environment. Shea’s favorite project was the all weather arena and round pen so she
is still able to work even during the hardest winter months. To read more about their
